Toothache or gum problems
Also called toothache, tooth pain, dant dard, gum pain, masude
What this means
Tooth or gum pain is usually due to decay, infection or gum disease. It needs proper dental care, as it does not heal on its own.
Safe to do at home
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Keep the area clean with gentle brushing and flossing
- Use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling
- Avoid very hot, cold or sugary foods
Please do not do this alone
- Do not place a tablet or clove oil directly on the gum, as it can burn
- Do not take antibiotics on your own
- Do not delay dental care for an infected, painful tooth
Book a consultation if
- Pain lasts more than a day or two
- There is swelling of the gum, face or jaw
- Gums bleed often or teeth feel loose
Get help immediately if
- Facial swelling with fever and difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing
- Severe swelling spreading to the eye or neck
