HbA1c: normal range and what your result means
Also called hba1c, a1c, glycated haemoglobin, glycosylated hemoglobin, 3 month sugar
What this test measures
HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the last two to three months. It does not change much from day to day, so it is the best single test to check or follow diabetes.
HbA1c ranges for adults
| Result (%) | What it means |
|---|---|
| under 5.7 | NormalYour average sugar is in the healthy range. |
| 5.7 to 6.4 | Prediabetes rangeYour average sugar is higher than ideal. This is the stage where diet, activity and weight loss can often stop diabetes from starting. |
| 6.5 to 9.9 | Diabetes rangeThis value is in the diabetes range. If you already have diabetes, most adults aim for below 7, but your doctor will set your own target. |
| 10 and above | Very highYour sugar has been very high for weeks. Please see a doctor soon to start or adjust treatment. |
Shown as a percentage on your report, for example 6.2 %.
Labs use slightly different ranges. Always compare with the range printed on your own report.
What helps
- Walk or exercise for about 30 minutes on most days.
- Fill half the plate with vegetables, and cut down on sugar, sweets, sweet drinks and white rice or maida.
- Losing even 5 to 7 kg, if you are overweight, can bring HbA1c down noticeably.
- Take diabetes medicines exactly as prescribed and do not stop them on your own.
Talk to a doctor if
- Your HbA1c is 6.5 or above and you have not been told you have diabetes
- You have diabetes and your HbA1c is above the target your doctor set
- You feel very thirsty, pass urine often, or are losing weight without trying
