SGPT / ALT (liver): normal range and what your result means
Also called sgpt, alt, liver test, lft, liver function
What this test measures
SGPT (ALT) is a liver enzyme. A high level means the liver is irritated, most often from fatty liver, alcohol, medicines or hepatitis.
SGPT / ALT (liver) ranges for adults
| Result (U/L) | What it means |
|---|---|
| under 41 | NormalYour SGPT is in the usual normal range. |
| 41 to 120 | Mildly raisedYour SGPT is mildly raised, often from fatty liver. Weight loss, less sugar and no alcohol usually help; a doctor can check the cause. |
| 121 to 399 | RaisedYour SGPT is clearly raised. Please see a doctor to find the cause. |
| 400 and above | Very highYour SGPT is very high. Please see a doctor soon, especially if your eyes or skin look yellow. |
Labs use slightly different ranges. Always compare with the range printed on your own report.
