TSH (thyroid): normal range and what your result means
Also called tsh, thyroid, thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroid test, thyroid report
What this test measures
TSH is the signal your brain sends to the thyroid gland. A high TSH usually means the thyroid is underactive; a low TSH usually means it is overactive.
TSH (thyroid) ranges for adults
| Result (mIU/L) | What it means |
|---|---|
| under 0.1 | Very lowA very low TSH can mean an overactive thyroid. Please see a doctor soon, especially if you have a fast heartbeat, weight loss or tremors. |
| 0.1 to 0.3 | LowYour TSH is a little low. This can be a mildly overactive thyroid or an effect of thyroid tablets. A doctor can check with T3 and T4. |
| 0.4 to 4.4 | NormalYour TSH is in the usual healthy range. |
| 4.5 to 9.9 | Mildly highYour TSH is mildly high. This often needs only a repeat test, but a doctor may suggest treatment in pregnancy, if you plan pregnancy, or if you have symptoms. |
| 10 and above | HighA TSH above 10 usually means an underactive thyroid that needs treatment. Please see a doctor. |
Shown as mIU/L or uIU/mL (the same number).
Labs use slightly different ranges. Always compare with the range printed on your own report.
